Our Story & Mission

Why We Stand Up Against Alzheimer’s

Turning student compassion into action through awareness, fundraising, and community support.

Our Beginning

A Promise Kept to Family

Founded during the 2025–2026 school year at Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest, LEAN began with a deeply personal connection to Alzheimer’s.

After witnessing her grandfather battle Alzheimer’s and her grandmother face the same disease, founder Rachel Weinberg brought together classmates, faculty, and local businesses to turn her experience into action. Today, LEAN gives students a way to raise awareness, support affected families, and fundraise for the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Learn the Facts

Understanding Alzheimer’s

Understanding Alzheimer’s is the first step toward making a difference. Learn about the disease, its impact on families, and why awareness matters.

What Is Alzheimer’s?

A progressive brain disease and the most common cause of dementia. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging.

Signs & Symptoms

Memory loss that disrupts daily life, confusion, difficulty communicating, and changes in mood or behavior can be warning signs.

Risk Factors

Age is the greatest known risk factor, while genetics, family history, cardiovascular health, and lifestyle may also influence risk.

Treatment & Care

While there is currently no cure, some treatments may slow disease progression or help manage symptoms and support quality of life.

Supporting Families

Patience, understanding, consistent routines, and caregiver support can make a meaningful difference for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s.
